Hundred Family Surnames Series, Vol. 3
The hundred Chinese Last Names originated from a classic list that was compiled by the order of a Chinese Emperor in the Song dynasty. The list originally contained 411 common ancient surnames arranged in rhyming 8 characters lines. Since then, these names have expanded to about 800 names and are used by the 90% of the Chinese population in the world today. Like many cultures, Chinese last names are passed down from generations to generations. Children would bear the surnames of their fathers and women would adopt the last names of their husbands once they get married. The Chinese surnames are significant and are often seen as a representation of a family's pride in its history.
